Preguntas frecuentes:
To climb Nevado de Toluca, you don’t need prior mountaineering experience, but you do need good physical fitness to endure a hike of approximately seven hours at a very slow pace (four hours ascending and two to three hours descending).
You’ll hike around 10 kilometers with 900 meters of elevation gain.
Unfortunately, there’s no specific season where snow is guaranteed on the mountain.
Climate changes have allowed snow to fall in different months in recent years—sometimes in August, other times in January, though it’s most common between November and March.
Often, snow falls and melts within three or four days, so even if you see the mountain covered in snow over the weekend, it’s very difficult to predict how long it will last.
In the first part, which is the forest area, it’s often not cold, and we hike in a long-sleeve shirt or light jacket.
Higher up, near the summit, there can be wind and colder temperatures. Therefore, we recommend layering and carrying everything listed in your backpack so you can add or remove layers as needed throughout the day.
No, it’s a National Park, and pets are not allowed.
Our groups are for beginners who are generally experiencing high altitude for the first time, and we go at a very slow pace to allow for acclimatization.
If you’re looking to train and want to hike at a faster pace, we can organize a private outing.
In group outings, no one is allowed to pass the lead guide, and we don’t allow anyone to hike unsupervised or stray from the group.
With more than 2 people, we can organize private outings on any day you prefer. Prices may vary depending on the number of participants.
We have a team of highly qualified guides who will take care of you at all times.
Vanessa Estol often accompanies many of our trips as a team leader (though she is not a guide), depending on the group size and whether she’s in Mexico.
The meeting point is very early in the morning in Colonia del Valle.
We meet at 5:45 AM, and around 7:00 AM, we make a final stop at an Oxxo in case anyone needs to use the restroom or buy something. We arrive at Nevado de Toluca at 8:00 AM, and after distributing the equipment, we begin our hike.
We set a time limit to reach the summit due to weather and safety concerns, usually by 1:00 PM, which is generally more than enough time. After resting and taking photos at the summit, we begin our descent.
Around 3:30 PM, we return to the van, and we arrive back at the meeting point in Mexico City between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
The usual ratio is 4:1. For example, in a group of 11 or 12 people, we send 3 guides in case someone needs to descend.
We never leave anyone alone.
Once you reserve your spot, we secure services such as guides and transportation; therefore, there are no changes or cancellations. However, you can transfer your spot to a friend if you cannot attend.
The only condition is that the person must meet the physical requirements for the activity and be over 18 years old.
It’s very common for rain to occur in the afternoons during the rainy season, but this usually happens when we’re already returning to the van.
We don’t cancel activities unless the park decides to close due to extreme snowfall.
There are no refunds if, for reasons beyond our control, we cannot reach the summit. However, morning rains at Nevado are very rare, so you can rest assured.
